Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker’s The George in Montclair
By Taylor Smith
Looking for a holiday getaway? Makeup mogul Bobbi Brown and her husband, entrepreneur Steven Plofker, have opened a stately and fashionable 32-room inn in the New York City suburb of Montclair. A 35-minute train ride from Midtown Manhattan, The George is the perfect weekend destination for tri-state area residents.
Brown launched her eponymous lipstick line in 1991, which led to an internationally recognized, all-encompassing makeup brand. That brand was then purchased by Estee Lauder in 1995. Brown officially stepped down from her company in 2016. With her husband (who is also an experienced real estate developer), the couple set their sights on a project in their own backyard in Montclair.
The crumbling, stately home that would become The George was built as a private residence in 1902. Brown and her husband worked with One Kings Lane to furnish that downstairs sitting room and paneled library. Brown also collaborated with brands like Nespresso and Smeg, outfitting every room with its own personal Nespresso machine and brightly colored Smeg refrigerator.
Each of the bedrooms at The George is uniquely decorated, with cozy comfort being the key. Bedrooms feature Caspar mattresses, pillows, and bedding. The luxury continues to the bathroom amenities like Dyson hair dryers, EO bath products, and Hello toothpaste. The robes are a hand-selected personal favorite of Brown’s.
Guests are invited to bring their dog to The George. According to their website, “all dogs receive V.I.P. treatment.” There is an extra charge of $75 per dog per night. The George provides personal dog beds for each of the furry visitors.
Room rates include a complimentary breakfast in the formal breakfast room. Reception is more than happy to recommend a curated list of the best restaurants in Montclair.
The George is located at 37 North Mountain Avenue in Montclair.
