Plate to Date: EN Japanese Brasserie’s Housemade Tofu Appetizer & Cucumber Cocktail

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

Deemed on Yelp as “one of the best Japanese brasserie's in NYC and probably the country,” it’s clear that EN is worth a stop. The ultramodern West Village eatery with ample space features seasonal Japanese cuisine and alcoholic beverages with a contemporary twist. Among their most popular appetizers is EN’s homemade tofu that comes either chilled or warm. Both versions are made the same way, but the chilled tofu has more water strained out of it giving it a firmer quality. It’s warm counterpart, on the other hand, has a much softer, silkier texture. Famous for its ridiculous freshness, EN’s tofu comes readily scooped and still has soymilk left with it when served. While their tofu can be enjoyed with wari joyu (soy sauce halved with bonito and seaweed broth) or sea salt, its best pairing may be EN’s Cucumber Cocktail.

This lovely electric green concoction combines EN’s house vodka with fresh Japanese Cucumber, lime juice, and simple syrup. Complete with a salted rim, mint garnish, and slice of cucumber with black pepper, this fresh beverage is sure to please the pallet.
